I went to Kassel in 2017 to visit the DOCUMENTA. In 2017 was the DOCUMENTA 14 “LEARNING FROM ATHENS”. It took place in Athens and Kassel. Most of the artists had their works presented in both cities. Artistic Director ADAM SZYMCZYK and his team discussed topics such as social and political situations, colonialism, north and south issues, global thinking, individuality, and language.
Created in 1955 by painter and professor ARNOLD BODE, Kassel Documenta aimed to present 20th century art works and bring Germany again in connection with the international art scene after the Second World War.
The first exhibition presented modernist art, defined as “degenerate art” by the Nazis in the past, and was a success. Thus, Bode planned the next event for 1959 and since then, Documenta has happened every five years, aiming to bring contemporary discussions, artists, and exhibitions. More than presenting what has been produced in the art world, Documenta brings new ways and directions to art.
Documenta is a giant event with many exhibitions and activities happening simultaneously all over the city. I recommend staying in Kassel for at least three days.
