When I was in Collioure I asked myself why this city wasn't as famous as other places in the south of France. This picturesque fishing village in the Mediterranean, near the Spanish border, is so adorable, and there is one of the most charming beaches I've ever seen. Swimming in front of the CHÂTEAU ROYAL DE COLLIOURE is one of my dearest travel memories. It felt like I was in some small paradise on earth.
Collioure was also the place that inspired the FAUVISM movement. It was where HENRY MATISSE, ANDRÉ DERAIN, ETIENNE TERRUS, ARISTIDE MAILLOL and DANIEL DE MONFREID worked together and developed the style full of strong colors and intense emotions. Walking there, you can find some signs indicating the landscapes that were inspirations for their paintings. There are also guided tours to learn about the movement and visit important spots for the artists, as well LA MAISON DU FAUVISM and THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART.
Also, part of the landscape is the MOULIN DE COLLIOURE, a 14th-century windmill located on a small beach.
Being a fishing port, Collioure is famed for its ANCHOVIES. It also has good wines, and you can visit some vineyards nearby. Being near the Spanish border, it also has great CATALAN CUISINE.
By car, you can reach BARCELONA in two hours. That's what I did :)
