Visiting Venice has something magical and romantic about it. Due to its beauty and historical importance, it feels like a fairy tale city. I love the book INVISIBLE CITIES by ITALO CALVINO, and it is said that all the cities he describes in the book have a bit of Venice.
The capital of the VENETO REGION is special, different from all the other cities I've ever seen.
On the other hand, due to its massive tourism, Venice feels like a ghost town that exists only for its visitors. It is difficult to experience local life.
When I was there, I enjoyed wandering through Venice and its canals and bridges without worrying too much about tourist sights. But here are some I would recommend:
GRAND CANAL
You will pass through the Grand Canal, the largest canal in Venice, by ferry on your way through the city. It is possible to appreciate the architecture, the palaces, and the monuments and see how impressive this city on the water is.
BRIDGE OF SIGHS
A very famous landmark, the bridge connects the NUOVE PRISON to the DOGE'S PALACE. It is said that the walk across the bridge was the last glimpse of Venice the prisoners would have before they got imprisoned.
PEGGY GUGGENHEIM COLLECTION
This personal Modern Art Collection acquired by the famous art collector Peggy Guggenheim is open for exhibitions at PALAZZO VENIER DEI LEONI, Peggy’s former home, on the GRAND CANAL. Peggy would say she was not an art collector but a museum curator.
Visit the palace, the temporary exhibitions, and the sculpture garden. It is a dream place.
VENICE ARTE BIENNALE
I planned my trip to Venice to also visit the Biennale in 2015, and the theme was ALL THE WORLD’S FUTURES.
Since 1895, every two years, Venice has presented a major contemporary art event. Bringing together artists, curators, and critics from around the world to develop the themes that will be addressed in the biennial and all the exhibitions and activities.
The organization is sophisticated and puts you in touch with the most current discussions related to contemporary art.
