With around two million inhabitants, Austria's capital is very elegant and charming. A real gem if you are into culture, design, art, and restaurants.
MUSEUMSQUARTIER
Let's start with MUSEUMSQUARTIER, a cool area where you can visit the MUMOK CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM and also LEOPOLD MUSEUM to check out its modern collection with works by SCHIELE, KLIMT and KOKOSCHKA. It's a nice area, even if you just want to walk around and have some coffee.
CAFÉ CENTRAL
Near Museumsquartier, about 1 km away, is Café Central, the most famous café in Vienna. Located inside PALAIS FERSTEL, this fancy café was a popular spot for philosophers and writers. It had among his regulars STEPHAN ZWEIG, FREUD, and TROTSKY. The environment is, for sure, a perfect Viennese experience.
BELVEDERE MUSEUM
A marvelous Art History class on VIENNA SECESSION and JUGENDSTIL. Belvedere Museum, a beautiful baroque building, houses a large art collection with works from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its highlight is certainly the largest collection of paintings by GUSTAV KLIMT.
Built in the 18th century, the palace was the summer residence of PRINCE EUGENE.
OTTO WAGNER AND FRIEDENSREICH HUNDERTWASSER
Austrian architect Otto Wagner was a leading member of the VIENNA SECESSION movement. You can find many of his works, in floral and ART NOUVEAU STYLE, in Vienna, his hometown. Some best-known works are the FIRST AND SECOND VILA WAGNER, KARLSPLATZ STATION, and CASA MAIOLICA (pic on the left).
Friedensreich Hundertwasser is another well-known Viennese architect, and you can check out his colorful expressionist buildings and facades in the city. His works are inspired by GAUDÍ, Art Nouveau and the Vienna Secession. Among his projects are HUNDERTWASSERHAUS and KUNSTHAUSVIEN.
